Georgia expects to announce the construction tender for the railway access line to the Anaklia Deep Sea Port before the end of October, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili said in an appearance on the television programme "Imedis Dila" (Imedi Morning).
The minister said the government believes that, together with its partners, it will be ready to launch the tender in the following month. She added that the very active construction work under way at Anaklia is fully in line with the schedule set by the government.
Financing agreed and design complete
Kvrivishvili said that, alongside construction of the port's fundamental infrastructure, it is critically important for the state to announce construction tenders for the access road and rail link on time. She confirmed publicly for the first time that negotiations with international partners, by which she meant financial institutions, have been concluded, and that Georgian Railway has completed the design of the rail access line to Anaklia port.
Moving to the next phase
According to the minister, announcing the tender will be a major step in moving the Anaklia Deep Sea Port project into its next phase of development. She also presented it as a clear demonstration of the systematic approach the state takes to developing strategic facilities.
Kvrivishvili said the government has a very specific plan with an accompanying timetable, which all relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Economy, are following closely. The main objective, she said, is for Anaklia Deep Sea Port to receive its first vessel in 2029, and the government will do everything required to achieve that.
The information was distributed by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.
What it means for investors
Rail access is a precondition for a deep sea port to function as a corridor gateway rather than a local facility, so the completion of design work and financing talks is a meaningful milestone. If the tender is issued as planned, it will create concrete opportunities for contractors and suppliers and give investors a clearer sense of when inland rail connectivity to Anaklia can be expected relative to the 2029 target. Land and logistics assets along the future rail approach will merit attention as the route and timetable firm up, although the minister did not disclose the tender's value or the line's specifications.
